In the early morning of September 11, 2001, I was sitting in a middle school classroom preparing for my upcoming class, when a colleague came quickly in the room and told me to turn on the TV. I quickly became enthralled by the terror that was sweeping our nation. In the days that followed the attacks, many people found ways to deal with their sadness and grief. Music became one of those outlets. Late in September 2001, I began work on We Will Remember as a way to capture the before, during, and after of the day - the calm before the attacks, the terror during, and the sadness and unity that followed. An optional narration opens the piece. Several themes represent parts of the day, and hints of patriotic tunes enter towards the end of this piece. We Will Remember was premiered by the Burrell High School Concert Band in December 2001.
